Sigmund Freud
Watching Genius of the Modern World 3: Freud.

Apparently, Sigmund rejected his own theory that all hysteria was the result of sexual abuse partly because he he couldn't believe that a member of his own family, in this case, his father, could have caused the hysteria of some of his siblings in this way.

Makes the recent news about Clement more ironic.

I wonder what his Mother would make of all this.

It's most succinctly put in his letter to Einstein in 1932. It's more about the psychology of war but it also explains why communities with laws dream up all-powerful, abstract individuals to keep all their alpha males in check.

Sounds like this is related to his epiphany (related initially to his correspondent and friend, Fleiss) that children suffer such ordeals as a phantasy experience rather than a real one; the embryo of his Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality.

Sigmund was an amazingly stubborn smoker. Even when his jaw cancer (probably caused by smoking) was so advanced that his mouth couldn't be opened normally, he'd force it open, insert a clothes peg to keep it agape, and shove in a cigar.

I guess for him, a cigar was never just a cigar.

Genius of the Modern World 3?

Fuck sake. I'll have to watch the first two now, otherwise this one won't make sense.
